Pond Inlet 2009 Initiation Camp

March 14, 2009 Alex Kilabuk and Eepa Qappik from Pangnirtung are here to participate to this first initiation camp of the season. After presenting some video at the school, more than 50 youth signed on to participate to the initiation camp.

The weather is cold and the wind in front of the community almost absent. The team with the participants had to take a one hour plus trip in Qamutik. Riding west all pass Mont Herodier where the channel between Bylot Islands gets narrower increasing the air speed into a light wind, enough to get the sails up and to train the people. Some 20 kids got to learned the basis of sail handling.

Some rapidly took off to enjoy cruising in this magnificent landscape. Alex Killabuk also had a chance to experience carrying a demonstrator of the Olympic torch brought in the community to raise awareness about the upcoming Olympic Torch Relay and the possibility for local youth to become torch bearer through the Sogoactive.com program

Danile Inuaraq finishes 1st in sped run and 3rd in long distance during Arctic Wind Riders 2009 Championship. With onlt 3 days of practice Daniel managed to outrace 4 year old veterans from Nunavik. It is certainly an easy sport to learn and each individual have the opportunity to reach the podium with a little training with makes it very interesting for newcomers.
